Cookies and Quilts

If you read this post you’ll know that Drew has been working on a secret project for the past couple of weeks.  Well, yesterday he finally finished it… or I should say “We” finally finished it.

He pieced the whole thing together, often while I was at work.

I would come home and find more and more completed blocks up on the design wall.  He amazed me with how organized he was.  The pink things are post-it notes he numbered in order to keep all the blocks in order.

He did most of the sewing on our little Singer Featherweight.  I love this machine – not only because it’s so light and portable, but this is what Drew learned how to sew on.  There is nothing fancy about this machine.  Just a straight stitch, forward and backwards, any 6 year old could manage this machine – and he is proof.

Once we pinned it he thought he would try quilting it.  I brought up my big Janome quilting machine and, bless his heart, he tried.  But, after about 10 minutes gave up and that’s where I stepped in.  I used a spiral design to quilt this together and then added the binding.

As soon as I was done he wanted to take pictures of it.  I love these pictures, you can see how happy he is to have his quilt done.

He even took a victory lap around the back yard.

As a side note, Drew has taken over the Hubba Hubba Ding Dong Etsy page.  He is trying to earn some extra spending money this summer and since not too many places are hiring 14 year old kids, we thought this might be a way for him to do what he loves to do and earn money.  This quilt is his 2nd listing.  The 1st: Original Toll House Cookies.

  1. Wow. Cookies, quilts, robots, and Janome all together. How’d you and Drew get 4 of my favorite things ;-) Thanks for all the photos. I’m just getting into quilting myself on a Janome 6500 after watching my mom for years. Great to see more guys and kids getting into quilt making.

    cheers,
    Don
